Why does Apple make adding ringtones to iPhone with iTunes 12.7 complicated? Well, it doesn't matter anymore! You can now create unique ringtones with the new macOS & PC app, iRingg. This article also shows you how to sync ringtones using iTunes 12.7.

Can I Set Ringtone in iPhone from Files?

The short answer is no. Sadly, it's not a natively supported feature. There are strict requirements for audio files that can be used as a ringtone on iPhone. And believe us, it's quite a tedious process to create a ringtone from a common MP3 file.

You: I just found a new awesome song. It would be awesome if I could add it to my iPhone as the ringtone right now.

iTunes: LOL, Not so fast!

UPDATE: Apple recently discontinued iTunes. Nevertheless, many people stuck with the same old iTunes on Windows or earlier macOS versions. And even if they have macOS Catalina, nothing changed for them in terms of ringtone management.

iTunes 12.7. brings many changes! iTunes is now easier to navigate and less cluttered. But there’s also no App Store, and you can’t browse your ebooks, iOS apps, and ringtones in iTunes.

Nice try, Apple, nice try. But how can we even add ringtones to iPhone?

Well, now it’s more confusing than ever. In iTunes 12.7, you can no longer buy iPhone ringtones or add them to your library. You must also connect your iPhone whenever you want to sync ringtones to your device.

Set Ringtone in iPhone using iTunes

The new iTunes update sparks some good tendencies. Clearly, Apple is finally trying to “unclutter” the huge monster iTunes is. The application became more organized, but there’s still a lot to improve.

iTunes U was moved into the Podcast section, while Internet Radio stations are now in your music library’s sidebar. Nevertheless, the biggest surprise is that the iOS App Store disappeared from iTunes now.

Goodbye, iOS App Store; you won’t be missed. At least you can always download apps directly on your iPhone. But now it’s even more confusing to add ringtones to the iPhone since you can’t browse them through iTunes.

The ringtones that were in your iTunes library before are safe. Now, they are in the iTunes media library on your Mac or PC. However, you can’t view them through the iTunes library. Nevertheless, you can still transfer them to your iPhone or even create a new one. Follow the steps below to add a ringtone to your iPhone:

  1. Connect your iPhone.
  2. Make sure to check “Manually sync files to iPhone” in your device’s tab.
  3. Locate the M4R ringtone that you want to transfer to your device.
  4. Drag the ringtone from your computer to iPhone in the left sidebar of iTunes
  5. Go into Settings > Tones and select your ringtone.

From now on you always have to plug in iPhone in your computer, whenever you need to transfer a ringtone to iPhone. There’s also no option to add ringtones to your iTunes library and have it there.

Bottom Line

Apple is finally and slowly trying to make iTunes less cluttered. There’s still a big room for improvement but the first step is done. Anyhoo, you can add custom ringtones to iPhone using alternative ways – even faster than before!

iTunes 12.7 focuses on music more than ever before. It also dumps the iOS App Store, so you no longer can browse iOS apps on a desktop.

Besides this, iTunes makes it harder to add ringtones to your iPhone. However, you still can sync your tones by dropping them directly to the iPhone’s sidebar in iTunes.

Alternatively, you may use iRingg, which stays as simple as possible. It accepts any ringtone, music, video, PDF & ePub and sends it to your iPhone or iPad immediately. It's by far the most progressive free ringtone app for iPhones out there.
